As proud members of the North Richland Hills community, we would like to extend a warm congratulations to the winners of this year’s Christmas lighting competition. Our city really gets into the holiday spirit, so picking the champions was a tough challenge. Nevertheless, in mid-December, members of the Keep NRH Beautiful Commission selected one winner from each of the city’s nine geographic areas. Winners from the 2012 and 2013 contests were not eligible to win this year’s competition. In the last few days before Christmas, why not take your family out for a night of light-peeping? From classic white light-edged roof tops to a recreation of Whoville, there is something for everyone’s Christmas tastes. You can find the entire list of this year’s winners on the city’s website.
Tips for Healthy Christmas Light Peeping
Of course a Christmas light excursion just isn’t complete without Christmas carols and some warm treats. However with so many seasonal goodies, it’s important to take extra precautions to protect your smile. Instead of hot chocolate, why not fill your family’s thermos with some herbal tea? This beverage is far less likely to cause decay than a chocolaty drink, and it will cause fewer dental stains than black tea. Instead of candy canes, pass around some sugarless peppermint gum. Gum can help remove bits of food and bacteria, and the xylitol can prevent dental decay.
Of course, ‘tis the season, so if you do choose to indulge in some sugary confections, just make sure to clean your teeth properly. Although brushing and flossing is important all year round, it is especially important now when sweet treats abound. Rinse out your mouth and wait about 30 minutes after eating before you brush your teeth. If you brush right after eating that cookie or sucking on a candy cane, you will only rub the sugar into your dental enamel. Flossing is also quite important. If you do not already do so, floss before bed to remove bacteria and bits of food. When you care for your teeth properly, your smile could be as sparkling as all of those festive Christmas lights!
